"Whatever may be said about human beings, they are as a whole, a family."

                               - Helene Foellinger

The Foellinger Foundation, Inc. is a private, charitable foundation that awards grants for the benefit of people in Fort Wayne and Allen County, Indiana. The Foundation was created in 1958 by Helene R. Foellinger, The News-Sentinel’s publisher from 1936 to 1980, and Esther A. Foellinger, her mother. It was established to carry forward their family’s tradition of civic involvement and active concern for the well-being of their community. From 1958 through 1987, their gifts and bequests developed the Foundation into a permanent philanthropic endowment. Its grantmaking continues to reflect the Foellinger family’s interest in encouraging a community of self-reliant citizens.

The Foellinger Foundation’s funding comes from lifetime gifts from Helene Foellinger, proceeds from Helene and Esther Foellinger’s estates, and contributions from The News Publishing Company until The News-Sentinel was sold in 1980. The Foundation is one of the largest sources of grant funding for nonprofit organizations that support our economy and improve life in Allen County.

While things have changed over the years, some things will never change:  the Foundation’s commitment to the founders’ values and principles:

Integrity. The Foundation will demonstrate faithfulness to this fundamental value.

Accountability. The Foundation will continually seek to improve its overall organizational effectiveness.

Responsibility. The Foundation will fulfill its obligations and demonstrate mutual trust and respect.

Results. The Foundation will strive to help people in Allen County advance from needing help, to helping themselves, to helping one another, and measure discernible effects.

The Foundation invests millions of dollars in grants to Allen County nonprofits led by people who have demonstrated leadership, a relentless focus on mission, and a commitment to results. Its assets are invested with a philosophy of long-term stewardship to assure that, as long as there are strong organizations helping children and families to create a better life in Allen County, there will be a source of financial support.
