Unique Funding Model to Sustain Summer Learning Labs

Foellinger Foundation has awarded the Boys & Girls Clubs of Fort Wayne up to $2 million via a Special Opportunity Grant to help fund the Summer Learning Labs program. This grant reflects a unique funding approach designed to ensure the long-term sustainability of the Summer Learning Labs.

The grant is structured to be repaid through state-funded reimbursements and will be distributed via a Field of Interest fund that Foellinger Foundation has established at the Community Foundation of Greater Fort Wayne.

Sarah Strimmenos, President and CEO of Foellinger Foundation, stated, “To help our grantee partners offer innovative, high-quality opportunities to residents of Allen County, our funding approaches must align with that same mindset.” She added, “Our board of directors is proud to have found a solution that brings this program back to the community and ensures it has the support it needs to stay strong well beyond this initial grant.”

The Summer Learning Labs is a free five-week summer academic and enrichment program. The mornings focus on math and reading delivered by certified teachers using a state-approved curriculum. Afternoons feature engaging activities, from STEM programming to field trips and hands-on fun. The program also provides breakfast, lunch, and snacks. These Summer Learning Labs align with Foellinger Foundation’s interest in supporting nonprofits that promote positive social, emotional, and academic growth among youth, giving students the chance to thrive as they prepare for the upcoming school year and beyond.

This partnership fills a crucial gap, ensuring middle school and junior high students stay active and supported throughout the summer.

Joe Jordan, President and CEO of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Fort Wayne, said, “This collaborative effort reflects a shared commitment among our partners to support the growth and well-being of youth in our community—especially those who need it most. It is a strong example of the impact we can make when we invest in our children and in the future of our community. We are grateful to Foellinger Foundation for its generous support in helping to make this program possible.”

Site locations for the 2026 Summer Learning Labs program will include the Boys & Girls Clubs of Fort Wayne, East Allen Community Schools, Euell A. Wilson Center, Fort Wayne Community Schools, Fort Wayne Urban League, and Wellspring Interfaith Social Services.
